Don’t fall into the at-home workout traps and take advantage of the following tips for a better at-home workout.
Whether it be your spouse, kids, pets, phone or TV there are a lot of things that can get in the way of your workout at home. Let your family know before-hand not to disturb you during your workout – This is YOUR time! If it helps, wear headphones to block out any noises or voices. Put your cel on silent or take the phone off-the-hook. We have voicemail. Thats what it’s for – Use it!
Having your own workout space will make it seem more official and help you to stick to your exercise routine. It doesnt have to be huge or overboard. Your Human Trainer on ceiling mounts is more than enough! Or keep a basket in the corner with your yoga mat that holds a bunch of resistance bands, and free weights. I keep my workout stuff by my computer and a shelf of workout DVDs. This way I’m all set to stream a workout or watch one I have.
It’s so easy to fall off track when exercising at home because there is no class schedule to stick to and no one is waiting to use your machine, so there is no time restriction on anything. Plan what exercises you’ll do the night before, lay out the needed equipment and take out your workout clothes. Take it one step further and queue up the DVD or bookmark the website. Do anything you need to to avoid any false-starts.
Sometimes we dont have a choice and a quickie workout is better than nothing, but if working out at home is your main workout time, making it consistently challenging is the only way to consistently see results.
It’s SO easy to stick with your favs and avoid the tough stuff, but you wont get the results youre after this way. Make sure your routine includes a mix of cardio, strength training, and stretching. Have a few different types of workouts on hand so you can switch it up throughout the week. If you see that its getting too easy for you, find a new workout. This will help keep things interesting too!
DVDs are less expensive than classes at a gym and once you buy one it’s yours for life. Invest in DVDs with workouts of all different lengths so you have the option to do a 20, 30, 45, or ?60-minute routine depending on the time you have.
There are so many options to stream workouts online nowadays. Join a program like The Human Trainer X50, or just google “streaming workouts” for sites that offer them. There are some great quickie workouts on youtube too! Streaming is a great way to have a ton of variety at very low cost. You can stream virtually anywhere so its great when traveling.
Some apps will alert you when its workout time, others help keep track of what you eat. Apps are a great way to get a workout in where ever, when ever
How do you home-workout? Let us know in the comments.
You’ve got your exercise routine down to a science, when BAM! You get hit with a bug! “Should I continue exercising through a cold or flu? If I stop will I have a hard time starting back up? Oh my God! I’ll lose everything I’ve worked so hard for! What should I do? WHAT SHOULD I DO?!” Calm down, take a deep breath (through your mouth if your nose is blocked of course), and read this:
The answer depends on whatcha got. Exercising with a cold may be all right, but there’s a thing called “the neck check.” If your symptoms are above the neck, including a sore throat, nasal congestion, sneezing, and headache, it’s okay to exercise, but if your symptoms are below the neck: coughing, body aches, fever, stomach issues and overall fatigue, then skip the fitness till you feel better. If you have a fever DO NOT exercise! The danger is that exercise raises your body temperature even more, which can make you MUCH sicker than you already are.
That being said, be sure to listen to your body, and don’t push yourself. If you can’t, you can’t. Even if you do decide to exercise through your cold, the intensity of your workout should be a lot lighter than normal. When we’re sick, a hard workout can be more than our immune system can handle.
Some examples of some lighter exercise you can do are:
Do your best not to spread your germs to the rest of the gym. Put a towel down on all equipment you touch, and wipe it off when you’re done. Wash your hands often, especially right after blowing your nose.
Lastly, consider doing your workout at home. A suspension gym, resistance bands, free weights, and exercise videos are great alternatives.
If you’re a regular exerciser missing a few days or a week is not going to have much impact on your progress. You don’t tend to have negative affects unless you miss a few weeks.
Even the most avid exerciser needs to ease back into exercise after an illness. Start slow and step it up gradually.
Stop it before it starts – Exercise can help boost your body’s immune system and prevent an illness. 30 minutes of moderate exercise 3-4 times a week has been shown to raise T cell levels, which are one of the body’s first defences against infection.
However, intense exercise like that that professional athletes do has been shown to weaken the immune system.
To avoid getting sick after a hard workout, or any time for that matter:

Yes, it’s a new year and time to get back into shape. Put down that chocolate chip cookie and get to work! But visiting the gym is such a chore, you might say. Many other workout enthusiasts will wholeheartedly agree with you. Create your own home gym without turning an entire floor into a mirror image of the local gym hangout. Make the space all for you with these few key tips.
Don’t Buy Every Workout Machine
Admit it: you often wonder what all those machines actually do in the gym. In reality, adding a simple set of free weights or dumbbells is your best bet to start a home gym. Because they aren’t attached to a permanent arm moving in one direction, you can switch up any exercise with weights in hand. Work the legs and arms together, for example, by squatting while performing shoulder presses.
Cover the Floor Too
That gorgeous hardwood floor you just installed isn’t going to be too pretty after dropping even just one weight on it. Be careful with your home and install rubber flooring in the gym area. You’ll protect the wood below while making the area easy to clean off from sweaty workouts. Any weights dropping to the floor will simply bounce off the rubber. Talk to a gym expert when buying the rubber. It should be thick enough to withstand normal weight drops while creating a slight cushioned effect on your feet.
Add Mirrors for Safety
No, you aren’t being vain or selfish by installing mirrors like the decorator in the pic below selected. In fact, mirrors are more for safety during workouts than to show off that hot body. When you perform any exercise, it’s critical to have the right posture and form to avoid injury. This fact is especially true for heavy weightlifters. Add mirrors to as many walls as possible to see yourself at various angles. It also makes the space look huge when visitors take a peek inside.
Space it All Out
Your first visit to the new gym will be your last if areas aren’t spaced correctly. Before hopping on that treadmill or trying some dead lifts, stand in each workout space. Carefully turn around with both arms out and parallel to the floor. If you strike anything with your hands, the space is too cramped. You need ample space to move and avoid injury. The last thing you want is to injure yourself with the wall.
Be Alternative, Man!
Home gyms don’t have to be carbon copies of one another so add a few new age pieces to spark your interest. Add an exercise ball to the gym, providing you with a balance lesson each day. Try the Beginner’s Exercise Ball Kit.
Resistance bands are a great alternative to free weights and take up a lot less room!
